how it was
I was taught the last 5 % is the most important, it’s all in the details, some have said the devil is there but I agree with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe who said its God. My friend Markle told me about him when I called to ask him if I can mention butt cleavage in a post to describe how hard everyone is working, he thought not.
It’s interesting to learn about this architect who also said, “less is more,” because I find when I am in a space that I created I will look around after it’s finished and not be able to grasp what all the fuss was about. It’s so calm, that’s how pretty much everything I make feels but getting there is anything but. Fun always, and exciting but more like chaos than calm. Maybe Dolly Parton said it best with, “It takes a lot of money to look this trashy.
Gillian and Michael and I walked to the Manx pub from thier house last night and met up with another couple who I did a total redesign of their “compound” in China town for and we have all become very good friends and got to dream about how its all coming together and how they will live there. It’s nice to share the photos with you all here. Renovations are hard, it might be the devil in them, it is exponentially more challenging than new construction so we are all feeling proud of how seamless this one is emerging.
I’m dreaming about doing some new building soon. Energy efficient, affordable, with modest square footage and a very expansive feeling to the homes. I’m off to YESTERMORROW (a wonderful place, I’m on curriculum committee and teach there,) this weekend to participate in a Passiv House workshop to explore some of these ideas. We have a lot off Carling Ave with some serious potential and am hoping I can rezone to put a row house with three door fronts on it. Maybe 1200 with a rental apartment in the basement of each, with good windows and high ceilings. This space could be used as an office or great room, (though I prefer calling it a studio,) in a home owners evolutions. Urban intensification is exciting, this is what I would like to buy and can’t find in this city and building it would be more fun anyay. I will keep you posted and hope you enjoy the photos, we’re almost there!
