I have one photo of my teacher and one of my grandmother, the later I put away sometimes. I put it away sometimes because to have it out would evoke things. There are a few shells from a magical visit to deep seas where luminous lavender fishes befriended me resting on a windowsill.

Two clay teapots, one is very small with ancient writing on it, from a time when I mastered this art in another life. With them sit four exquisite Chinese teacups, a whole cosmos painted on each. A precious sister who I have been to wars with gave them to me. I am awestruck by her blossoming amidst the ravages of cancer. If she metamorphosizes I may put these cups behind cabinet doors for they are already too full. I pray they will be with me in the open for a very long time. How our world needs her brilliance.

I have a crystal ball but only because it is pretty, I don’t play with ghosts. It sits on a windowsill and I enjoy its perspective on our world sometimes. I love all that is round. This is my only god.

The beautiful house, a model I made of a home that is tapped into a natural harmony so it could never house a fight, sits upon a cliff. Actually a cabinet. Most of my things are held in this cabinet, behind glass doors which I covered in white tissue paper washed in glue …reminding me of white birds flying on a white sky. Reminding me to fly.

On a beautiful low to the ground, old Chinese table sits my Buddha and the delicate silver goddess whose naked breasts implore me to embrace all that is divine in my femininity. The Woophat my ever faithful elephant god sits here too, my ever vigilant protector and muse.

My one kitchen wall is like a tree too ripe with cherries. Colanders, ladles, dainty white ceramic measuring cups, hang here… an egg slicer, a little cast iron frying pan, and another that makes heart shaped eggs and pancakes, potato masher, 2 sieves one small, potato masher another, this one actually works though not as elegant in form, spatula, shiny coffee spoon, little cup from a sister I am in a cold war with, most generous serving spoons, one for feeding only giants, and a whisk. Someone counted 5 graters hanging there but he missed two at least, they never pay me mind so I leave them at peace. Small jars with rich orange and red and yellow spices, nuts in glass, and beans in jars and jars of seaweed. Men like to hold them up to the light somehow these jars of exotic things enchant them most, when I have shared my world ever so fleetingly.

There is also a white ceramic vessel of peach colored Himalayan salt, without a lid so I can touch it and taste it when ever I want and so can you.

A thin, narrow cotton mat lies on the floor and lulls me to gentle sleep. My bed used to fit two ever reminding me of my longing, now it is my cocoon. Gentle palest yellow that only ever whispers, and cradles me while catching my dreams, till someday I might let them in, not yet though, they are too…

My simple bed is ever evocative and there is no cabinet for this.

Three paintings by my beloved teacher awake in me my highest brilliance and breathe me through my toes… Lulu I was woken suddenly to paint this for you, just for you. An elephant of course, one eye golden and the other charcoal… fiery, beautiful, alchemic.

The storms come as I write this, my sky has turned a pale gray with a blue cast, the leaves that surround me even more luminous now awaiting their lover to dance them about, a flash of lightening and symphony of rippling kisses of the rains. When I close my door one would never suspect I live next to a wound, perhaps even within, in this tiny golden cosmos.

An elephant inside an elephant inside an elephant sits before me on its golden throne, calling me home. My old friend gave him to me and wonders if I remember sharing berries near the river together. My sister brought me to him. Our son tells me I cannot leave without this treasure. His father bade him pledge.
