The good is the enemy of the best, is a saying that I love because it’s not the mediocre that poses threats, we know where we stand with crap, it’s things that almost work that insinuate and linger, sometimes even seduce us or more lull one into being ok with mediocrity, cause it almost passes as good… enough. But it aint, and nothing spotlights that like hitting a pure note as I feel we are with this kitchen remodel.
before
It’s mostly cosmetic, a kind of construction couture if you will and locked on to that elusive perfect pitch of design like a cruise missile. Any notes that wander astray, (and believe me I am vigilant) are being picked up by my client, (I’d like to start calling clients partners, cause they are…. is that too pretentious?) who has pretty exquisite taste. I can’t wait to show you when it’s all done in the next week or so.
Instead of a honed marble we’ve gone with a raw one, which is actually less costly, and not trying too hard, it has a favorite blue jean feel, that I can’t wait to feel when the counters are actually installed next week. They’ve already been on quite a journey, Micah my stone fabricator brought the slab through downtown Ottawa to my clients office building so she could see the very one and make sure
it was just what she wished for. See they’d been flirting, her and the stone hadn’t quite committed till that day at the office. Too many times I have been in a kitchen I didn’t do and heard the owner apologizing for their stone counters, it’s not the slab that I picked, that was so much nicer… It’s crazy to me that more care isn’t taken with such an important and durable element.
We’ve opened up the space without actually opening up the space a whole lot. There were cabinets hanging between the kitchen and dining room and all around and we eliminated those and found innovative ways of utilizing all the http://www.mbkgranite.com/about.html after careful evaluation of what actually is essential and even managed to add a single drawer dish washer!
I’m a bit of a minimalist, not to be confused with a frugalist. I wish was, sort of… but I love things to be lovely too much. There could be an argument made for that being a kind of frugality because beauty is the most sustainable thing there is, I wouldn’t try to pass that one off on you though.
I love beautiful things and hope my contribution to our world will out mass what I have used up of it… I pray about this and aspire to giving more in every way and for today it’s by
getting there...we've opened up the room
creating this beautiful kitchen that I believe will be well loved by whomever enters this home cause they will feel how much care was taken to create it. And by writing about it here cause it’s our stories that will heal our world. It was sweet when I asked my client if it was ok to write about her kitchen. At first she was unsure and I was cool with that. Then she said, but it’s a really good story so go ahead, see why I want to call them partners? And I have to agree, nesting is always a really good story and I hope gives us each more to give to our world.

December 17, 2010 at 3:03 pmI loved this piece, Moneca. A heartening thought that “our stories will heal the world”. I can’t wait to see the raw marble. Sounds so cool. But not “too kool for school, Milan style”, a term I learned from my new friend Markle.
